Word Counts

Standard

A lot of people say word counts for novels should be between 80K and 100K. Apparently, most of these people never got the memo. 😉

  1. That 80-100 thousand word count rule applies only to first time authors, on their first books, for a very good reason. 100,000 words is getting close to 400 standard pages, at which point the cost of binding and printing a book jumps significantly. It’s more efficient to test the waters with a smaller book, and publishers are more willing to do that. The books then become larger after a sales history has been established. A lot of recently released series exemplify that guideline.
